El álbum cuenta una épica historia interplanetaria ambientada en un futuro no muy lejano, aunque las propias canciones se mantienen por sí solas en el panteón de los Pumpkins. Se trata de la última entrega de una trilogía de álbumes conceptuales, que comenzó con Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness, de 1995, y continuó con Machina/The Machines of God, de 2000. El álbum cuenta con tres miembros originales de la banda -William Corgan, James Iha y Jimmy Chamberlin-, así como con el veterano guitarrista Jeff Schroeder.
